چکیده

We use agent-based simulation in a coordination game to analyse the possibility of market power abuse in a competitive electricity market. The context of this was a real application to the England and Wales electricity market as part of a Competition Commission Inquiry into whether two particular generators could profitably influence wholesale prices. The research contributions of this paper are both in the areas of market power and market design policy issues for electricity markets, and in the methodological use of large industrywide evolutionary simulation models.

Evaluating Government’s Policies on Promoting Smart Metering in Retail Electricity Markets via Agent Based Simulation

In this paper, we develop an agent-based model of a market game in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the UK government’s 2008-2010 policy on promoting smart metering. We also consider possible supplementary strategies. With the model, we test the effectiveness of four possible strategy options and suggest their policy implications. The context of the paper is a practical application of age...

The CrocodileAgent 2012: Reaching Agreements in a Simulation of a Smart Grid Wholesale Market

Over the last few years electricity markets are going through liberalization and modernization processes, which have resulted in introduction of smart grids. The Power Trading Agent Competition (Power TAC) is a simulation platform for evaluating trading strategies for the smart grid electricity markets: the tariff and the wholesale market. This paper gives an outline of our proposed strategies ...

Kasimir Egli Analysis of Strategic Behaviour in Combined Electricity and Gas Markets Using Agent-based Computational Economics

In many European countries, natural gas-fired power plants are considered a possibility to quickly compensate the expected shortfall in electric energy supply. Increasing gasfired generation capacity would also increase the couplings and interactions between gas and electricity systems. So far, gas power plants participate in two different markets gas and electricity. Coupling these markets by ...

Multi-agent simulation of competitive electricity markets: Autonomous systems cooperation for European market modeling

The electricity market restructuring, and its worldwide evolution into regional and even continental scales, along with the increasing necessity for an adequate integration of renewable energy sources, is resulting in a rising complexity in power systems operation. Several power system simulators have been developed in recent years with the purpose of helping operators, regulators, and involved...

Evaluating Government’s Policies on Promoting Smart Metering Diffusion in Retail Electricity Markets via Agent-Based Simulation

In this paper, we develop an agent-based model of a market game in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the U.K. government’s 2008–2010 policy on promoting smart metering in the U.K. retail electricity market. We break down the policy into four possible policy options. With the model, we study the impact of the four policy options on the dynamics of smart metering diffusion and suggest policy...
